Neck Lift / Cervicoplasty surgery by Las Vegas Plastic Surgeon Dr. Frank L Stile, MD, FACS

Neck Lift / Cervicoplasty Surgery

A person’s hands and neck are the first two things that give away their age. Loose and sagging neck skin, jowls, fullness under the chin and the progressive development of neck bands can make both male and female patients look older than they actually are. Hanging skin below the chin is often referred to as a “turkey neck”.

Neck bands (or plastysmal bands) are an age-related condition that appear when the platysma muscles become cord-like. This causes the appearance of stripes or “banding” across the front of the neck. Neck bands are the result of a combination of sagging neck skin with an increased prominence and separation of these platysma muscles.

A neck lift, also referred to as a cervicoplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that tightens sagging neck muscles, tightens skin to accentuate the jaw line, corrects jowls, and removes excess neck skin and fat. Liposuction is also used and often part of a neck lift procedure. A neck lift can be done as a single procedure or combined as part of a facelift.

How Is The Procedure Performed?

Neck lift surgery / cervicoplasty procedures are performed in our fully licensed Ambulatory Surgery Center; Premium Surgical Services Center. The center is also Joint Commission certified. This procedure is performed while using general anesthesia for the patient’s comfort and doctor’s control. General anesthesia as well as pre and post-operative care are provided by our Board Certified Anesthesiologist. Neck lift surgery is an outpatient surgical procedure. Patients are discharged, and may return home or transferred to our affiliated after care center, following their surgery.

Neck lift surgery / cervicoplasty begins by making incisions in front of the ear. The incision follows the ear’s contour, continues under and around the earlobe to the back ear crease and finishes along the back hairline. The skin of the neck is then carefully elevated off the neck muscles. An additional incision is made under the chin. The loose platysmal muscles that create neck bands are tightened and lifted. Liposuction is often used as part of a neck lift procedure to reduce fullness under the chin. The skin is then gently pulled back and excess skin is removed. Small sutures are used to close the incisions. The process is tedious but the results are outstanding with almost no detectable scars. Staples are never used in this procedure. Soft plastic drains may be employed and are removed at the first office visit.

A neck lift may take three hours or longer depending on the amount of correction needed. There are several different versions of a neck lift that can be used. Patients can discuss these techniques with Dr. Stile to see which one is optimal and will have the best result based on their individual needs.

Recovery

When a neck lift procedure is completed, incisions are coated with antibiotic ointment and the neck is fitted with loose bandages to promote the healing process. Patients recover in our post anesthesia care unit, and when stable, are either discharged home or transferred to our affiliated after care center.

Patients are instructed to rest while keeping their head elevated following the procedure. On occasion, patients report minor to moderate discomfort following neck rejuvenation surgery and this can be controlled with oral pain medication. Cold compresses may be used to minimize swelling, decrease inflammation, and enhance the healing process.

Dr. Stile’s patients are seen the next day for a surgical follow-up visit and if needed, drain removal. The dressings are modified, or re-administered and a support garment is applied. Sutures are removed in the office at 7 days and 14 days following surgery. If they are feeling up to it, patients may resume full activity in as little as 3 weeks following their surgery.

Cosmetic improvements following a neck lift procedure are immediately evident but mature results are fully appreciated several weeks to months after surgery as swelling completely reduces in and around the neck. The benefits of this procedure are long-lasting and patients will experience a more refreshed and youthful appearance
