Gynecomastia Correction / Male Breast Reduction
Abnormal male breast enlargement or gynecomastia, is quite common but rarely talked about. Gynecomastia results from the overdevelopment of the male breast tissue, an over- accumulation of fat on the chest or a combination of the two – fat and breast gland. The Breast skin may be involved (sagging or ptotic skin) to varying degrees as well.
Gynecomastia is a condition that affects up to 50% of young and older men. Genetics, massive weight gain, over the counter and prescription drugs, marijuana, and performance enhancing drugs aka “steroids” are all cited as causes of gynecomastia.
This condition, which is sometimes referred to by athletes as “bitch-tits”, can be corrected by one of several plastic surgery techniques. Male breast reduction (gynecomastia) surgery removes fat and/or glandular tissue from the breasts. In some cases, excess skin must also be removed during the male breast reduction procedure.
The result is a chest that is flatter, firmer, and better contoured. The goal for patients is a more masculine appearance. Several techniques are used by Dr. Stile to treat patients who want male breast reduction or correction of gynecomastia. Dr. Stile either uses less-invasive suction assisted lipectomy (liposuction) techniques, directly excises (cuts out) the gland through a small incision or uses a combination of both liposuction and excision for correction of gynecomastia.
Dr. Stile’s patients have included UFC fighters, professional boxers and professional body builders. For these patients, appearance is important. Being seen on national and international broadcasts with what may be misinterpreted as tell-tale signs of Performance Enhancing Drug use may be damaging to both career and reputation. Other patients include men of all ages who complain of looking odd in fitted shirts or feeling self-conscious in the locker room or on the beach.
Whether you’re an professional athlete or someone who doesn’t want to be limited from wearing certain shirts or just want to feel greater comfort in the locker room or on the beach
This information will give you a basic understanding of the male breast reduction procedure. However, all patients are unique. An individualized consultation with Dr. Stile is needed to select the procedure most appropriate for your needs.

This is an outpatient surgical procedure. Gynecomastia corrections are performed in our state-of-the-art operating room. Premium Surgical Services Center is a free standing fully accredited Ambulatory Surgery Center licensed by the state of Nevada. Our center is also federally regulated. We have attained additional accreditation from the Joint Commission’s ambulatory health care accreditation program with “deemed MCR approved status”. We are the only privately owned center dedicated to the specialty of plastic surgery that has both these accreditations in the state of Nevada.
The procedure is performed while using general anesthesia (patients are fully “asleep”) for comfort control. General anesthesia as well as pre and post-operative care are provided by our Board Certified Anesthesiologist.
The procedure is carried out through a small incision created at the edge of the areola. Through this incision, both the fatty tissue and breast gland are removed by excision. If further contouring is required liposuction can also be used to achieve a perfect contour.
When a patient’s gynecomastia includes significantly sagging skin, a male version of the Wise-pattern Mastopexy or lift procedure is used for correction. This procedure employs an anchor-like incision along the underside of the breast.
The incisions include the area where skin that will be removed, thus defining how the nipple will be relocated. The skin surrounding the areola is re-approximated down and together lifting in addition to reshaping the chest.
Recovery after Gynecomastia of Male Breast Reduction Surgery
Gynecomastia correction and Male breast reduction are outpatient surgical procedures. After surgery, and following a short stay in our post-surgical care unit, patients are discharged home. Generally, post-operative instructions call for rest and limited arm movement in order to speed up the healing process and shorten recovery time.
Bandages, dressings and steri-tape are applied right after surgery to aid the healing process as well as minimize movement of the breasts. These are held in place by a specialized surgical vest that is worn for four weeks.
Patients describe the pain associated with cosmetic breast surgery as ranging from minor discomfort to significant soreness. The perception of pain is a uniquely personal experience. However, this discomfort is effectively controlled with oral pain medication. Patients can resume most normal activities not requiring lifting of heavy objects or exertion at two weeks. Full activity including exercise and resistance training can begin following the fourth week.
Complications from this procedure are rare. Patients can minimize potential problems by carefully following the directions given by Dr. Stile after surgery.
