How is Ear Surgery Performed?

Otoplasty is an outpatient procedure that normally requires some type of anesthesia, usually general anesthesia. Small incisions will be made around the ears to allow the surgeon better access to the cartilage. Cartilage can then be manipulated through removal, reshaping, and reforming to repair the ears for an improved, symmetrical look.

Learn More About Ear Surgery

Ear surgery is commonly used to pin back protruding ears, repair earlobes, reshape, and resize to provide natural-looking results. The length of the surgery depends on the technique and the condition of the patient’s ears. Excess skin from the ear can also be removed if needed.

The best candidates for ear pinning surgery:

  • Have prominent, sticking out, misaligned, misshapen, or disproportionate ears.
  • Can be as young as five years of age to correct ear abnormalities.
  • Have anxiety or are self-conscious about the look of their ears.
  • Desire a long-term solution.
  • Desire a natural look.

Results are long-standing and should provide years of positive benefits for patients. Patients can enjoy an improved appearance of misshapen ears, smaller ears, and ears that are less prominent or closer to their head.

Following ear surgery, the ears will be dressed to provide protection to the repair while also keeping the operative site clean. The dressing will remain in place for children and adults for around five days. Dr. Stile suggests the use of a sports-type headband for two weeks to maintain the ears’ new position and protect the ears while sleeping. There’s little pain or discomfort associated with otoplasty, but patients should expect to experience tenderness and swelling. It’s crucial that pediatric patients not touch or bother their ears while they are healing.
