The forehead and eyebrow region often shows noticeable signs of early aging. Loosening of forehead skin and muscles can cause deepening forehead wrinkles, drooping eyebrows and even worsened eyelid hooding.
An expertly performed forehead lift, Browplasty or “brow lift” procedure can address these issues with the scalp and brow structures that directly affect this area. This procedure begins by lifting and tightening the forehead skin or scalp. The results are repositioned raised eyebrows, softened frown lines and a smoother looking forehead. A Forehead Lift or brow rejuvenation procedure restores a more youthful, brighter eyed, more awake and refreshed look to patient’s brows. The procedure diminishes the horizontal lines and furrows that can make patients appear angry, sad, tired or aged.
An endoscopic or open technique can be employed during this procedure and incisions are placed behind the hairline. A series of small incisions are used in the endoscopic approach with the assistance of a camera. In those patients requiring correction of excessive skin laxity, a temporal brow lift or an open approach may be more suitable to achieve the patient’s desired results.
A brow lift may be performed alone, or in conjunction with other procedures, such as facelift, or eyelid surgery. Brow lift surgery is individualized for each patient and Dr. Stile will recommend a specific technique that meets your needs for optimal results.
This information will give you a basic understanding of the brow lift procedure. However, all patients are unique and an individualized consultation is needed to select the procedure most appropriate for your needs.
How Is The Procedure Performed?
Forehead lift procedures are performed in Premium Surgical Services Center. Premium is a fully licensed Ambulatory Surgery Center. The center also holds Joint Commission certification. Brow lifts are performed while using general anesthesia for the patient’s comfort and control. General anesthesia as well as pre- and post-operative care are provided by our Board Certified Anesthesiologist. Forehead lift surgery is an outpatient surgical procedure. and patients are discharged, returning home immediately following this procedure.
The endoscopic method for brow lift surgery is much less invasive than the temporal or open techniques, yet can achieve a very desirable result. Endoscopic forehead lifts begin by Dr. Stile making a series of small incisions (1 cm in length) just behind the hairline. An endoscope which is small surgical camera and specialized instruments are passed through these incisions. Forehead skin is separated away from the facial skeleton and brow muscles are modified to reduce wrinkles and furrows. The forehead skin and brows are lifted and secured in a raised position. The incisions are closed with sutures or staples.
A temporal brow / limited incision brow lift uses slightly longer incisions than an endoscopic brow lift. These incisions are made just above each temporal hairline and Dr. Stile will lift and reposition the tissues of the outer brow area. Then, through each of the incisions, the area between the eyebrows is lifted to smooth out frown lines.
With the advent of less invasive techniques, the coronal brow lift, which was once considered the standard technique, is reserved for brow correction in patients with significant brow ptosis (sagging). In these patients, a coronal brow lift is necessary to achieve a patient’s desired results.
The coronal / open technique utilizes one long incision made behind the hairline. The incision extends from ear to ear. The excess skin is actually removed and brow muscles are modified to reduce wrinkles and furrows. The remaining skin is lifted, and repositioned, incisions are closed with sutures, resulting in a more youthful appearance.
Forehead reduction surgery or hairline lowering surgery can be used to reduce an excessively high hairline or large forehead in both men and women. The forehead reduction procedure can be performed at the same time as a forehead Lift (Browplasty), or as a stand-alone procedure.
Brow / Forehead Lift Before & After
When a brow lift procedure is completed, incisions are coated with antibiotic ointment to promote healing. A specialized compression brow dressing is fitted on the patient’s forehead. This dressing is specifically designed to hold the brow in its new corrected position as it heals. Patients recover in our post anesthesia care unit, and when stable, patients are discharged home.
Patients are instructed to rest while keeping their head elevated during recovery. Patients commonly feel a sensation of tightness throughout the forehead post surgery. Some swelling and bruising is very common the first week after surgery, but this reduces during the second week. Patients report minor to moderate discomfort following brow rejuvenation surgery and oral pain medication can be prescribed for pain control. Cold compresses may be used to minimize swelling and enhance the healing process.
Dr. Stile’s patients are seen the following day for a routine wound check. Sutures or staples are removed during an office visit 7- 10 days following surgery.
Patients may return to non-physical activity and jobs one week after surgery. Two weeks following surgery, patients can resume most normal activities including exercise and driving.
The benefits of this procedure are long-lasting and brow lift patients will experience a more refreshed and youthful appearance.
Non-surgical treatments can also be used to reduce wrinkles in the forehead:
- Cosmetic Fillers & Injections
- Botox (for Forehead Treatments)
