What is Medical Weight Loss?

The meaning of the term “medical weight loss” has changed with the arrival of weight loss medications such as GLP-1 agonists like semaglutide. While these medications can help you lose weight, most people would rather not take them forever. Sustaining lasting weight loss requires a comprehensive program of education and behavioral changes customized to your needs and lifestyle.

What is Medical Weight Loss?

Healthy weight loss requires much more than just medication. While weight loss medications can help you eat fewer calories, they do nothing to help you with other important factors, such as:

  • Sustaining your body with appropriate nutrition for your age and biological needs
  • Building and maintaining muscle mass
  • Experiencing the cardiovascular and other health benefits of physical activity
  • Developing long-term relationships with a medical team that supports you mentally and physically

Dr. Stile’s medical weight loss program begins with an extensive assessment of your health and body composition, including medical testing and measurements. He then develops an individualized program of healthy nutrition, physical activity, and sustainable behavior changes. While some providers of “medical weight loss” simply provide medications, Dr. Stile and his team focus on your long-term success.

What Results Will I See With Medical Weight Loss?

Each person’s weight loss journey is unique, and Dr. Stile will help you set realistic goals so you can enjoy success as you reach your milestones. While you may start to see small changes on the scale within a few weeks of beginning the program, the healthiest way to lose weight is a gradual process.

Each person will also lose a different amount of weight depending on their starting weight, health, and many other factors. While BMI is one tool used to measure body mass, each person’s healthy weight will vary. Medically supervised weight loss allows you to achieve and maintain your health over time.

Are There Any Side Effects With Medical Weight Loss?

While medications such as semaglutide can have significant side effects, Dr. Stile’s comprehensive medical weight loss program generally has no side effects. If you take supplements, you may experience minor effects such as stomach upset and constipation. The effects of improving your nutrition and physical activity are almost universally positive.

Am I a Good Candidate for Medical Weight Loss?

Many factors contribute to your success with medical weight loss, but one of the biggest is your commitment to participate in the program and work with your team to keep your goals achievable. Good candidates are typically concerned with their body weight and want to lead a healthier lifestyle and maintain a slimmer figure.
If you are at or close to your desired body weight but have specific areas of fat you struggle to get rid of, Dr. Stile and his team offer surgical options such as liposuction and nonsurgical options such as CoolSculpting®. While very effective for body sculpting, these procedures are not intended to assist with weight loss.
