What is an Eyelid Lift or Blepharoplasty?

The skin of your eyelids is thin and flexible, making it prone to wrinkles and sagging. An eyelid lift, also known as eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty, can be performed on the upper lids, lower lids, or both to address signs of aging and correct issues such as wrinkled or loose skin, eye bags or puffiness. With a relatively quick recovery and dramatically youthful results, blepharoplasty is one of the most popular types of facial cosmetic surgery.

Upper vs. Lower Eyelid Lift: Which Do I Need?

An eyelid lift can address the upper or lower lids, depending on your needs. Only a consultation can determine which option will provide you with the best results. Many people will choose to have the upper and lower eyelids treated.

Upper Eyelid Lift

You may need an upper blepharoplasty if your upper eyelid skin looks loose, wrinkled, or droopy. Your upper eyes may have a “hooded” appearance due to sagging skin, and this loose skin can even get in the way of your vision. You may also notice areas of puffiness at the edges of the eyelids that can be corrected for a tighter, smoother look.

Lower Eyelid Lift

The lower eyelid may droop, making the undereye area look tired. As your skin thins, fat pads may shift and become more visible, leading to puffy undereye bags. If you have hollowness and dark circles under your eyes, you may benefit from fat transfer or dermal fillers to complete your rejuvenation process.

What is Recovery Like After Eyelid Surgery?

After your procedure and a short recovery period in our accredited surgical center, you can return home. Your eyelids will look bruised and swollen, so we recommend resting with your head elevated, medicated eye drops, and cold compresses to help these effects resolve quickly. Most people look and feel mostly normal within a week and can return to low-activity jobs. You will usually be cleared to return to your usual activities within about three weeks.

Am I a Good Candidate for an Eyelid Lift?

An eyelid lift can improve the appearance of your eyes if you have concerns such as sagging skin or eye bags. There is no “best age” to have this procedure since signs of aging around the eyes can begin when you are relatively young. Good candidates should be in good health and have reasonable expectations. Eyelid lifts are not recommended for people with certain medical conditions.
