If you feel self-conscious about the size, shape, or overall appearance of your breasts, you may benefit from breast augmentation. With this procedure, you can have fuller, more symmetrical, more shapely breasts. As with all surgical procedures, taking proper care of yourself during recovery helps ensure good results.

HOW DOES BREAST AUGMENTATION WORK?

During a breast augmentation, Dr. Stile uses the dual plane method. This means that a silicone or saline implant is placed behind the breast tissue, with two-thirds of the implant behind the chest muscle and one-third above it. This provides a more natural appearance and feel. Dr. Stile will recommend the best method for placing your implants, usually using a small incision disguised along the edge of the areola or in the crease under the breast.

WHAT IS RECOVERY LIKE FROM BREAST AUGMENTATION?

After surgery, most people will see bruising and swelling that lasts about two weeks. Dr. Stiles recommends that you take two weeks to rest and recover. People with low-activity jobs may return to work within ten to fourteen days. Healing takes anywhere from four to eight weeks.

HOW TO SLEEP DURING BREAST AUGMENTATION RECOVERY

While your breasts recover, you will need to protect them from too much pressure. This means that your sleeping position can help or hinder your recovery. Dr. Stile recommends sleeping on your back with your upper body slightly elevated. This will prevent any pressure on the breasts and will allow fluid to drain. If you cannot get to sleep in this position, talk to Dr. Stile about other safe sleeping positions.

SHOULD I GET A LIFT WITH MY BREAST AUGMENTATION?

An additional consideration with breast augmentation is whether you also need a breast lift. A breast augmentation can add volume, but if you have loose breast skin. To enjoy the full results of your breast augmentation, you may also choose to have a breast lift.

A breast lift uses an incision around the areola and under the breast. Dr. Stile removes loose skin and lifts the breast tissue into a higher, more youthful position on the chest. He will also reposition the areola, which often starts to point downward when breasts sag. Dr. Stile may recommend a lift if he feels that you will not get the best results from your augmentation without one

HOW LONG DO BREAST IMPLANTS LAST?

After recovery, you can enjoy your new breasts for anywhere from ten to twelve years and sometimes even longer. You might choose to have your implants removed before this time if they develop any problems, which is rare but not impossible. As implants reach the end of their lifespan, they become more susceptible to problems.

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR BREAST AUGMENTATION?

If you feel uncomfortable with your breasts and would like more roundness and volume, you may be a good candidate. Good health is important, and you should have reasonable expectations about your results.
