How Soon Can You Return to Work After Rhinoplasty?

If you feel like your nose draws unwanted attention, a surgical procedure can help it harmonize with your features. Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job, is a surgical procedure that reshapes the nose. It is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries performed today, helping patients enhance their profiles and boost their self-confidence. If you’re considering rhinoplasty, it’s natural to have questions about the procedure and what to expect.

What is a Rhinoplasty or Nose Surgery?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that alters the shape and size of the nose. It can be performed for cosmetic reasons, to improve the appearance of the nose, or for functional reasons, to correct breathing problems. Nose surgery can be performed to adjust the size or shape of the nose, restore symmetry, or help sculpt a nose that balances your facial features. Dr. Stile is a specialist in facial plastic surgery who makes each nose surgery a customized procedure.

How is Rhinoplasty Done?

Rhinoplasty is typically performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes incisions inside the nose or across the columella. The skin is then lifted, and the surgeon reshapes the bone and cartilage of the nose. In some cases, cartilage grafts may be used to support the nose or to improve its shape. Once the surgeon has completed the reshaping, the skin is redraped, and the incisions are closed.

Individuals who feel like their nose is too prominent or their features lack definition may combine rhinoplasty with a procedure such as chin augmentation to achieve a stronger, more shapely profile.

How Soon Can You Return to Work After Rhinoplasty?

The recovery time after rhinoplasty varies depending on the extent of the surgery and your comfort level. You will often have a splint on or in your nose that will be removed after a few days.  Most patients can return to work within one to two weeks, but you may still have some noticeable swelling and bruising at this point. Most of these effects fade within a few weeks. Dr. Still will typically clear you to resume your exercise routine after four to six weeks.

How Soon Will I See My Rhinoplasty Results?

The initial swelling after rhinoplasty will subside within a few weeks, allowing you to start appreciating your new appearance. However, some residual swelling will continue to fade gradually over the next several months. Your final results may take up to a year to fully develop, although most people are very pleased with their appearance within a few weeks of surgery.

Am I a Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

Good candidates for rhinoplasty are in good overall health and have realistic expectations about the results of the surgery. They typically want to achieve a nose that balances their other features for a more harmonious appearance. It is important to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon to discuss your goals and expectations and to determine whether rhinoplasty is right for you.
