Our expressive faces let us communicate many emotions, but the movements of these muscles cause lines and wrinkles to develop. Botox® smooths expression lines to give you a more youthful, relaxed appearance. If you have noticed lines and wrinkles becoming deeper or lasting even if your face is at rest, now might be the right time to consider Botox®.

WHAT IS BOTOX®?

FDA-approved in 1989 for medical purposes and in 2002 for cosmetic use, Botox® is an injectable neurotoxin that relaxes muscles. Botox® is used for facial lines, wrinkles, and medical conditions like excessive sweating and muscle spasms. Botox® can smooth and soften lines and wrinkles. It can also prevent future lines by limiting the muscle activity that causes them.

HOW DOES BOTOX® WORK?

Botulinum toxin, the active ingredient in Botox®, works by blocking signals between nerves and muscles. When injected into your facial muscles, Botox® travels to the nerves and stops them from sending signals. The muscles stop contracting and become relaxed, easing the tension on the overlying skin. Lines and wrinkles can soften and become smoother. Botox® also has an anti-aging effect since your skin can remain relaxed and less affected by your facial expressions.

HOW LONG DOES BOTOX® TAKE TO WORK?

When injected, Botox® will travel through the muscle and reach the facial nerves. This process can take several days. Some people see results within a day or two. You will see your full results after about seven to ten days. After treatment, you can expect Botox® to last three to four months. Some people, especially those who have Botox® regularly, may see results lasting up to six months.

WHERE CAN YOU HAVE BOTOX®?

Botox® works best on lines and wrinkles caused by facial expressions. Popular locations for Botox® treatments include:

  • Crow’s feet around the eyes
  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Frown lines, sometimes called the 11’s, between the brows
  • Fine lines around the mouth

Doctors use Botox® all over the body to treat various medical conditions.
