Dermal fillers and Botox® are both cosmetic injectables, but they differ from each other in both formula and use. Dr. Frank L. Stile offers both of these treatments, but many ask, how are they different from each other?

WHAT IS BOTOX®?

Botox® is a specially formulated neurotoxin that relaxes the muscles in the face. This popular wrinkle treatment has been FDA-approved for over 20 years.

The muscles in our faces help to create everyday facial expressions. When injected, Botox® helps temporarily silence the nerves in those muscles, which smoothes out the skin from years of dynamic expressions.

Botox® is temporary, and generally lasts for around three to six months.

WHAT DOES BOTOX® TREAT?

While Botox® can treat various conditions, it is mainly for the treatment of moderate to severe wrinkles. There are quite a few areas of the face that Botox® can treat, including the “11” shaped wrinkles that appear between the eyebrows, horizontal forehead lines, and “crow’s feet,” which are the lines around your eyes.

A key difference between Botox® and dermal fillers is that Botox® does not treat fine wrinkles from volume loss

WHAT ARE DERMAL FILLERS?

Dermal fillers are an injectable treatment for volume loss. At Stile Aesthetics, we offer a range of dermal fillers, including the Juvéderm® and Restylane® families of fillers.

Dr. Stile injects dermal fillers into different areas of the face to enhance the appearance. They also reduce fine lines and wrinkles resulting from volume loss.

WHAT DO DERMAL FILLERS TREAT?

Not only can dermal fillers treat lines and wrinkles, but they can also add volume to the cheeks and lips. There are different formulas of dermal fillers with different consistencies from thick to thin. The Juvéderm® family of fillers, for example, uses hyaluronic acid, which helps plump the skin. Sculptra® uses poly-L-lactic acid, which triggers collagen production slowly for longer results.

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR BOTOX® OR DERMAL FILLERS?

Many people can make good candidates for either Botox® or dermal fillers. If you have moderate to severe wrinkles from years of dynamic expressions, Botox® may be for you. On the other hand, dermal fillers may be a better option for you if you have fine lines and wrinkles caused by volume loss.
