Have you noticed fine lines and wrinkles around your eyes and forehead when you smile or frown? These expression lines will initially disappear when your face relaxes, but over time, they will become deeper and more lasting. Botox® can be used at almost any age to address or even prevent these lines and wrinkles.
HOW DOES BOTOX® WORK?
Botox® is the world’s most well-known treatment for expression lines. It works using botulinum toxin, a neuromodulator that affects signals between nerves and muscles. Botox® injections cause your facial muscles to stop receiving signals that tell them to contract. As a result, the skin becomes smooth and lets your wrinkles relax. Botox® treats lines at the corners of the eyes (crow’s feet), between the brows (glabellar lines or the 11s), and horizontal forehead lines.
AT WHAT AGE SHOULD YOU START GETTING BOTOX®?
The decision to get Botox® should always be an individual one. Some people start to develop expression lines and wrinkles earlier than others. Your fine lines and wrinkles may not bother you, but they might bother someone else. The best age to start Botox® is the age when expression lines start to make you self-conscious.
Some people now start Botox® at the first sign of fine lines and wrinkles. The advantage to starting Botox® at a younger age is that the lack of facial muscle contractions will prevent wrinkles from developing or progressing. Botox® injections work for individuals of any age. However, it often has the best preventative effects for individuals in their thirties.
Factors that affect the best age for you to start Botox® include:
- Genetics
- Sun exposure
- Skin elasticity
- Skincare products
- Your unique facial expressions
While Botox® can relax and smooth fine lines and wrinkles, it does not undo them. Preventative or early Botox® makes an excellent option for keeping these lines from forming. However, older individuals also see amazing results with Botox®, so there is no age requirement.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU GET BOTOX®?
Botox® results usually develop in about a week after your injections. You can usually expect your results to last three to four months. However, it can last longer for some people, especially those who have been getting Botox® for a while. You will learn how your body responds to Botox® and how often you need touch-ups.

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR BOTOX®?
Almost anyone makes a good candidate for Botox®. Ideal candidates are healthy adults with reasonable expectations. Most people who have Botox® are in their 30s or older, but some people in their 20s may be good candidates if they are already starting to develop wrinkles. You may not be a good candidate if you are pregnant or have a skin infection in the treatment area.
