Have signs of aging appeared around your eyes much sooner than you expected? Drooping eyelids and puffy undereye bags often run in families, and you may find yourself with your mother or father’s tired-looking eyes. Even without genetics, age-related collagen loss leads to thinner, less elastic skin around the eyes. If your eye area makes you feel self-conscious, eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty may be the best solution for you.

What is Eyelid Surgery or Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is the formal name for a type of eyelid surgery performed on the upper or lower eyelids to improve signs of aging and remove excess skin. You can have surgery on both sets of eyelids if you have concerns about both areas. Eyelid surgery is one of the most popular facial procedures due to its relatively short recovery time and dramatic but natural-looking results.

What Happens During Eyelid Surgery?

When eyelid surgery is performed on the upper lids, Dr. Stile uses an incision hidden in a crease of skin to prevent it from being visible. He will tighten loose skin and remove excess fat that can cause unwanted fullness at the edges of the lids. Incisions for the lower eyelids are made in a crease or inside the lid. Dr. Stile tightens the skin and repositions or removes pads of fat that create a puffy appearance.

How Long Does Eyelid Surgery Take?

Dr. Stile and his team perform blepharoplasty in an accredited surgical facility. The length of the procedure depends on several factors, including the complexity of your surgery and whether you have your upper and lower eyelids treated. You can expect one set of eyelids to take about an hour and both sets (upper and lower) to take two hours. However, Dr. Stile will take as much time as needed to achieve your best results.

What is Recovery Like After Eyelid Surgery?

Recovery after blepharoplasty is usually smooth and fairly quick. Swelling and bruising after the procedure can be managed with cold compresses, keeping your head elevated, and following the instructions your team provides. Most people return to work and light activities within a week and more strenuous activities after about three weeks. Residual swelling can last up to a few months, so your results will continue to improve.

Am I a Good Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

Most healthy adults can have eyelid surgery. The most common concerns include loose skin, undereye bags, and wrinkles. Good candidates have reasonable expectations and understand the risks and benefits. You should not have eyelid surgery if you have certain medical conditions. Only a consultation can determine whether blepharoplasty is the best way for you to achieve your goals.
